MT Cultural Day
The Tamil Language (TL) Unit together with CL and ML Units of AI celebrated the MT Cultural Day in May 2016. The Indian Students had the opportunity to know about the Indian Dance and the Indian musical instruments.

Parai (Drumming) workshop (2018)
In conjunction with Mother Tongue Fortnight for Sec 1 cohort, Tamil unit organised a workshop on performing arts, drumming. The drum called Parai is one of the oldest symbols in Tamil culture.
It consists of a circular wooden frame with one end closed with cow skin membrane and the other end open. Together with Parai, students also learnt the history and the cultural aspect of the various types of Indian percussion instruments.
Visit to SPH / Tamil Murasu (2018)
Our Tamil students paid a visit to SPH on 21st Sept 2018 to have a first hand experience on News production and Journalism.
The first part of the workshop gave the students the overview of the paper which they are reading every Thursday in school as part of our reading programme.
They learned the history of the paper and the experiences of reporters. They had hands on sessions on interview skills and tips on report writing to encourage them to write.
In conjunction with SG50, Ahmad Ibrahim Sec School Tamil Unit organized a SG50 Project Work cum Oratorical Competition at inter school level.
The competition aimed to arouse greater interest in Tamil Language as well as instil the values of appreciating our pioneer generation. It helped to develop oral proficiency and provided a good platform to develop students’ confidence in using Tamil in various communication situations, both formal and informal.
This mini project competition involved 5 schools and the best projects from the competition were exhibited at the 2015 MTL Symposium held at Suntec City.
Budding Writers Programme (2018)
Selected Tamil students participated in a Budding Writers, Artist and Poets programme which was an opportunity for them to explore their talents and flair for writing. It exposed them to local writers and scriptwriters so as to equip them with literary and creative writing techniques.
The students were also exposed to local poets and poetry writing techniques and were immersed in poetry appreciation.
John Rajan Kenisha Janet of 3E2 was awarded a silver award and a trophy.
‘Thamizhum Suvayiyum’ – Tamil Language Competition 2018
Our students, Heshwetha d/o Sivanandan (3E3) and Kalyaniambigai Magendran (3E4) did just that as part of a competition this year about the Tamil language and culture through everyday items found at home – food. As food is the ‘spice’ of life, the competition literally involved identifying spices used in everyday cooking.
The students were challenged to translate recipes, solve spice-related riddles, and identify Indian spices from the given Tamil names. In another part of the competition, students had to pick out the correct spices from a given shopping list.
Our students competed with 14 other schools in the competition organised by the ‘Valar Thamizh Iyakkam’ (Tamil Language Council) and clinched the Second Position!
The school was awarded a trophy and the students each received a Kindle e-Reader.
‘TAMIL SHORT FILM MAKING’ – Workshop cum Competition
In conjunction with the Tamil Language Festival 2016 in April, Yishun Secondary Tamil unit organised a Tamil Short Film Making Competition cum Workshop for N2 secondary schools. 12 Secondary 2 Express Tamil students from our school participated. The objectives of the competition cum workshop were to encourage the creativity of students through the enhanced use of spoken and written Tamil in creating the short film and to create a platform for TL students to showcase their capabilities & talents. Students were taught the basics of short film making such as storyboarding, scriptwriting, filming and editing. Thereafter, the students in a group of 5 was given a month to create their short film based on their chosen topic. They are to write their story ideas into a screenplay and shoot them shot by shot to visualize their film.
The highlight for this year for Tamil Unit is our students’ excellent performance in this short film competition. Our pupils won first and second prize and emerged the overall champions for the competition and did our school proud.

“To learn, love and live the language” in our mind, Tamil Unit is proud to provide an authentic learning experiences to our students to develop them into youth to be confident in communicating and expressing themselves in Tamil.
In line with Pongal Celebration the Tamil Unit organised Tamil Cultural Activity Day on 18 Jan 2019. The main highlight of this event is Pongal Exhibit Display Competition. The theme of this competition is Knowing and Appreciating Our Culture. With regards to this competition, we also invited two other schools to send their Secondary One Tamil Students to participate in this competition.
